Peering Through the Looking Glass

You guys. I have a confession to make –

I haven’t even seen Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass yet! The namesake cosmetic collection came out May 1st on Urban Decay’s website, and the movie was released on May 27th, but with all the wedding craziness, I kind of ignored them both until very recently. Side note though: when researching the release dates, Google let me know that this movie is still showing at my local dollar theater! Maybe I’ll make it to a showing after all.

Even though these debuted in May, as of today, the collection is still available on the Sephora, Macy’s, and Nordstrom websites! Don’t worry, you haven’t missed out yet.

Let’s start with the good:

THE. PACKAGING. I had to make a couple of collages to keep this from being too picture-heavy, but as you can see, details alone would give this palette an A+ in any collector’s book!

The outside is decorated in what can only be described as a psychedelic color scheme, while the inside lid reveals an interesting quote, “I’m not strange, weird, off, nor crazy, my reality is just different than yours.” I love the loopy gold writing, but my inner grammar policeman has his sirens blazing over the comma in place of a semicolon after the word ‘crazy’. This can be forgiven once the little doors are lifted to reveal a beautiful three-dimensional butterfly!

Unfortunately, what this Alice palette gives us in design, it lacks in performance. The bottom drawer is also adorned with a quote that reads, “I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I must have changed several times since then.” When you open the drawer, it reveals 20 exclusive multi-colored shadows in various finishes, plus a double-sided synthetic shadow brush. From the swatches, you can tell that they’re very hit-and-miss.

On the top row, Looking Glass and Lily showed up almost exactly the same in the swatches. Heads Will Roll was pretty, but has a chunky golden glitter in the pan that loses all sparkle on the skin!

Row two did well, with the exception of Dream On at the end. I find that their shimmers do swatch terribly when dry though, so I have a feeling that it would perform much better with a dampened brush.

Then we have this palette’s savior: the glorious, heavenly third row. Leave it to me to love the neutrals and oranges the most! It’s not my fault that they were all creamy and pigmented, and clearly looked the best on the skin.

The last row was fairly solid too, with Royal Flush really surprising me as a beautiful highlighter.

If you’re a fan of Disney, Alice, or Tim Burton, you absolutely need this in your collection! If not, I would understand if you decided to save up for the next Vice palette instead.

Now the lipstick – well, that’s another story! Of the five shades that launched with the Looking Glass collection, I picked up silver-blue Time because of how unique it is. The shimmery slate shade is going to be perfect this fall, and while it hasn’t been getting much mileage from me this Summer, I can see myself wearing it time and time again (funny?) during the cooler months. This one seems to be sold out everywhere, but I’ll keep you in the know if I find a great dupe!

Lastly, as some of you may remember, when the first Disney Alice in Wonderland live-action movie came out in 2010, Urban launched a special palette to commemorate that movie as well. It sold out incredibly quickly, and can now be found on eBay for up to $500! The cheapest one I’ve seen recently was listed for $100, but it was the only one even near that price range, so I might question its authenticity. Did you get ahold of it? I found one about 5 years ago on a trade site, and I’m so glad that I did! Follow me on Instagram @lovelybyleann, and I’ll post a #tbt shot of it tomorrow for old times’ sake (:

The colors look so fun! I love urban decay because it lasts throughout the day pretty much. The eye palette is right up my ally and I think it would be great on my darker skin! Great post!
