If you haven’t heard of Charlotte Olympia’s line before, she is a British shoe and accessory designer who’s collections are very reminiscent of pin-up and Hollywood glamour. Her collaboration with MAC included these two lipsticks, amongst other things, in a gorgeous (no surprise) special packaging!
I ordered Leading Lady Red and Starlett Scarlet when they launched and received them a couple days later, but I haven’t been able to review them because the swelling in my lips after the injections made it impossible to wear lipsticks this last week.
Thankfully, these were worth the wait!
I’m noticing a theme with MAC’s lip designer collabs- they always seem to have rectangular tubes instead of the regular bullet. Is this a known thing, or just a coincidence that the Proenza Schouler and Zac Posen lipsticks are also in this packaging? This time, each tube is clear with gold details, and a delicate spiderweb on one side with ‘Charlotte Olympia’ emblazoned on the other. So pretty!
Normally, with my fair skin and light blue eyes, I prefer a bright, bold red to complement my complexion. I thought Leading Lady Red, with its matte finish and warm undertone, would fit the bill perfectly. Not so! While I did like it a lot, it still had no perceptible wow factor imo, and seemed a little dry. It’s super pigmented though, so if your lips aren’t as dehydrated as mine, I say go for it!
My favorite by far was Starlett Scarlet. A deeper red than I’m used to, it nevertheless was very complimentary to my skin tone. It seemed smoother in texture than its sister, and wore for six-and-a-half hours (even through a quesadilla lunch) before finally starting to fade and dry out on me. There’s that wow factor! The undertone is pretty neutral, but may run cooler on you if you’re very olive.
These were the only items I picked up from the collection, but I’m glad I did! I like these lip colors very much. Did you splurge on anything from MAC X Charlotte Olympia? Let me know in the comments!
